IP License for games and the origin of Accidental Possession

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

Hi everyone,

Today I thought I would share a bit more about the background of 'Accidental Possession' (the link below shows a brief description of the game):

Alternatively, visit this blog post for the original game announcement.

Now, what you might not know is that the game was inspired originally by a TV show and graphic novel (that will currently remain unnamed) and was the first game I created during the pandemic back in 2020! As a new designer/ publisher, I quickly found out the challenges I would face to try and obtain an IP license - I did try. I looked up how I could contact the show distributor, the artist for the graphic novel, and more. I also asked around in the industry how likely I would be to be able to obtain such a license, but I kept hearing the same thing that the original creators would probably not want to risk giving an IP license to someone new to the scene - I was advised that if I wanted to do this, I could sell my idea to a big name publisher, but this is not something I was keen on. It's a shame because those who have played the game loved it - and once we could finally meet after isolation rules were removed, it was a great way to reconnect with friends and family.

Unfortunately, I didn't hear back from those I contacted, but instead of shelving the game, I have been considering an alternative theme for the last 2 years, and I hope to be able to release the game with the original theme in the future once YNC Games is better known in the industry. The good news is, this is how the journey of Alchemy and Other Problems started!

I have a few more games I created during the pandemic requiring IP licenses, but I'm not disheartened by not (yet) being able to get licenses to release them - if the creation of 'Accidental Possession' has shown me anything, it's that the development of the theme around it has led to so many new ideas for spin-offs and related games that now all fall under the series name "Alchemy and Other Problems". It was through the creation and development of this game, that I decided I wanted to start YNC Games and share my ideas and games with all of you.
